The ACOG As A Hunting Scope

For 25 years Trijicon have been improving their range of magnifying reflex sights. In an ultra competitive market, Trijicon have become the magnifying sight of choice for the assault and battle rifles of the US Army and Marine Corps, Special forces, British Army and Israeli Defence Forces. Trijicon earned total market domination by coming up with a product that was utterly rugged, had brilliant optics, would function in all lighting condiitons and battle ranges and would adapt to any direct fire weapon. Trijicon came up with the ‘Bindon Aiming Concept’ that puts an illuminated aiming mark on the target with both eyes open aiming. Trijicon revolutionised rapid sighting with their Bindon Aiming Concept, putting an illuminated aiming mark directly on the target for both eyes open shooting. This mark is available in different shapes for different purposes in up to four colors. The illuminated aiming point often sits on top of a ballistic compensating and ranging reticle that allows for aimed fire to the effective range of the platform.

How does this translate to a hunting? More and more hunters are realising the benefits of ultra rugged precision optics with the benefits of very rapid both eyes open aiming. Despite the trend to laser flat shooting ultra magnum cartridges, the fact is that most hunting in the Lower 48 is done at less than 200 yards. In these circumstances sheer precision takes a distant third place to rapid target acquisition and shot placement. The black cross hairs and narrow field of view of a traditional scope make it hard to find the target or even the cross hairs themselves in deep underbrush. A low magnification reflex sight like the ACOG TA44SR-10 offers the benefits of the rapid target acquisition of a red dot sight with the magnification to discriminate targets in dense underbrush. You put the aiming mark on the turkey’s neck and squeeze the trigger removing the urge to lift your head to find the turkey’s head and throwing your pattern clear over it’s head.

All bottlenecked hunting rifle cartridges from the .222 Rem up let you aim straight on on a deer’s vitals out to 250 yards. In parts of the Eastern US, 200 yards may be a very long range shot – some states insist on shotguns which preclude longer distances. You won’t want to exclude the possibility of taking a longer shot should the need arise. The last thing you want when that deer finally appears is to wonder if you’ve dialled in the right direction or started from zero. Just putting the correct aiming mark on the kill zone is so much easier than fiddling with turrets and counting clicks. Whilst the aiming marks are set up for the 5.56mm M855 and 7.62mm M80 rounds, you can easily go out and see where your own rounds impact relative to the marks from a 100 meter zero.

The intermediate magnification ACOGs like the TA33-8 ACOG make a terrific predator shooting system when combined with an AR15 platform with a good trigger. The Bindon Aiming Concept aiming point combines with the ballistic stadia reticle to enable engagement at all ranges. These sights can be retrofitted or, with the TA01NSN-RMR 4×32 reflex sight for example are supplied with a piggy-backed red dot sight for very close, fleetingly exposed targets that can appear in coyote shooting. Mid range varmint hunting can be accomplished with the higher powered ACOGs, getting you on target fast on critters as they pop out of their holes unpredictably. Low light will be far less of a problem with the ACOG’s lower mag and superb optics.

Trijicon’s killflash (optional on most models and standard on some military units) prevents any possibility of objective lens glint spooking your deer.

Buy an ACOG and never worry about batteries or electronics again. The aiming point in BAC models is illuminated by fiber-optics by day and tritium by night.

Finally, the ACOG is ultimately rugged. Provided it is mounted on a sturdy base, it will not lose zero. Once taken off it will repeat to within 1 MOA. Designed for military use, the ACOG will resist exposure to everything nature can throw at it including water pressure down to 80ft. Hunting seasons are short and you may well have had to win a lottery ticket or spend out $100s in out of state hunting taxes. That’s not a good time to have a high quality but delicate telescopic sight fail on you. The West’s armed forces had that dilemma and worse and overwhelmingly chose the ACOG. Civilian hunters have always taken military technology and adapted it to their needs – obvious examples are Mauser rifles and cartridges, 4×4 vehicles and GPS. Putting an ultra rugged ACOG reflex sight on your rifle merely takes that tradition one step further.
