Sights For Wild Turkey Hunting
There are profound advantages to using non magnifying or very low magnification optical sights in hunting. The sight picture is very fast to pick up and place on the target, even against the clutter of silhoutted branches etc.. You retain full situational awareness, unlike the situation with 4X or greater magnification scopes where you have to work out where your scope is pointing in relation to the target – this can be really waist precious seconds against featureless backgrounds. They really shine in close country hunting for deer and turkey of the kind that predominates in our Eastern and Southern states. Although these sights were primarily developed for the military (exception Aimpoint) the manufacturers realise the importance of the huge US hunting and target shooting market and have created models to address its needs.

This unit, which is parallax free beyond 25 meters has a 4 MoA dot (actually 3.8 MoA) only weighs an incredible 3.7 ounces with a screw operated Picatinny mount. The US Army think enough of this sight’s partner, the NV compatible T-1 to trial it in Afghanistan for potential general issue. That alone should indicate how rugged it is. You can carry an H-1 in your pack to keep you shooting should your scope fail, or even mount one on top of the scope with a Pictatinny ring adapter to give you an instant close range back-up to your scope. Surprisingly, in Europe, the H-1 has a following for wing shooting and is often found on duck hunting shotguns. It takes a single CR2032 battery on which it will run continuously for 50,000 hours.
Eotech’s rugged holographic weapon sights have won a great reputation for themselves with the US military being purchased by units and private soldiers in large numbers as well as being adopted by US SOCOM. Eotech have deliberately kept focused on the military and law enforcement markets, but hunters are served by a small range of low cost models suited to their needs. The hunting models take AA batteries and offer the full range of daylight intensity adjustments to cope with all lighting conditions. One big advantage of this system is that even if only a tiny part of the rear sighting window is visible, you can see the aiming pattern and get your shots on the target. Trijicon’s ACOG sight first surfaced with the Army’s Advanced Combat Rifle (ACR) about 20 years ago. The ACR may have come to nothing but ACOG sights went on to take the world’s militaries by storm. The TA44SR-10 is a 1.5X16 unit with a red dot in a circle reticle intended for rapid engagement of close targets. You don’t have to worry about batteries or electronics with this sight as it is illuminated by a combination of batteries and tritium. The TA44 comes ready to fit an M16 carry handle but adapters are available for either Weaver or Picatinny rails. 1.5X is a great compromise between rapid target acquisition and identification. Standard on the Steyr AUG, this magnification is standard on the service rifles of Austria, Australia, Ireland and New Zealand. The TA44 is about as close to a perfect wild turkey sight as you can get.
