Accessories For The M14 Rifle
The M14 rifle was only the US Army’s standard infantry rifle for about a decade, lingering on in National Guard units earmarked for Europe for a little longer. However, it won a firm following with civilian shooters in its M1A guise and, despite being given away in large numbers in military aid and being scrapped in huge quantities under the Clinton administration, enough were on hand to give our soldiers a longer ranged, harder hitting alternative to the M16 in the Global War on Terror. All four services now employ the M14 in various capacities from ceremonial to EoD disposal and the M39 and EBR are standard platoon weapons in the USMC and US Army in Afghanistan respectively. The civilian market was amply served by companies like Springfield Armory putting out offerings that used a variety of new and ex USGI parts. Even a Chinese company, Polytech, managed to secure a market share until imports from that country were banned.
There is no shortage of accessories available for these popular rifles. There are components available that enable you to turn the 1950s M14 into the equal of any 7.62 battle rifle manufactured today. You can improve the ergonomics of the M14, reduce or eliminate its muzzle climb and mount the optics to take advantage of its long range accuracy.
The M14 has always been difficult to mount optics on. If you are happy to forward mount or are willing to use a clip guide mounted rear rail, you can always use a handguard replacement rail system. The Amega Ranges Mini Scout is one such rail system. This machined Aluminium rail clamps to the barrel so solidly that in tests it has increased the accuracy and consistency of weapons substantially. Not only does it give you a length of Picatinny rail along the top of the barrel but it can also take Picatinny or Weaver sections to either side to take lasers or flashlights. It will not interfere with the use of receiver mounted scope bases or with the factory iron sights. You can only fit this unit to standard USGI profile barrels – not on any heavy, stainless, ‘Loaded’ or Chinese manufacture M14 clone.
A replacement stock can revolutionize the entire performance of the M14 rifle. Arguably the most impressive stock on the market is the Troy M14stock or Modular Chassis System. The immensely strong MCS is milled from a solid billet of T-6 aluminium. The stock can be fitted to your rifle in about 20 minutes with ordinary hand tools and will render your rifle immune to the need to re-bed every thousand years or so. The four rails include one that runs the full length of the top of the system at the same height – no other M14 chassis has this. This is exactly what is needed for easy co-witnessing. Muzzle climb is eliminated by having the axis of the stock slightly above that of the bore. The Troy MCS adds one pound to the weight of the USGI M14 rifle, but as a side mounted scope mount can easily weigh a pound on its own, this equates to no difference.
This chassis system will accept any stock or pistol grip manufactured for the AR15. For example the Magpul CTR stock. Troy battle sights are engineered to a high standard and make an excellent back up in the event of main optic failure. You can also mount a fore-grip like the Troy modular combat grip under the front of the weapon to aid controllability. The Troy M14 stock is not cheap, but it is arguably the best and certainly the most versatile of the aftermarket stocks and the one that makes the weapon most controllable. It also has the subtle advantage that it resembles an AR series weapon and thus does not mark its user as a DM or sniper, prioritizing you as a target.
