Your thoughts on the FN Five-seveN? Should US SOCOM start fielding this pistol?

I personally have fielded the weapon and I think it’s the best pistol I have ever fired. It’s extremely lightweight (lighter than any conventional .45 or 9mm) and more accurate than any pistol I have fired in my life, not to mention that it’s oh so so pretty! Anyway, from a ballistics standpoint, the 5.7x28mm round has greater armor penetration than competing pistol calibers and more kinetic energy as well as having a wider bullet diameter than the 9mm and .45. This is the kind of weapon that I’d love to see the US Navy SEALs using as a sidearm in the near future. Your thoughts?

I think you are seriously mistaken on your knowledge of ballistics there.

The 5.7×28 round is not wider in diameter than the 9mm or .45 ACP round. The 5.7×28 is 5.7mm’s wide while the 9mm round is 9mm’s wide… hence the names 5.7 and 9mm. The .45 ACP round is 11.5mm’s wide, which is also wider than the 5.7 and 9mm rounds.

Also, the 5.7×28 does not have more energy than standard NATO ammunition. At most, it has about about 400 ft-lbs of energy, while the 9mm and .45 ACP both have about 420 ft-lbs of energy.

I will give the round one thing though. The 5.7×28 round is capable of greater armor penetration than either of the two above rounds, mainly due to its velocity. SS190 rounds (illegal for normal civilian use) travel at extremely high velocities (about 2300 ft/sec) and are therefore better able to penetrate soft body armor. However, they do not pack the same punch as their larger cousins, mainly due to their smaller diameter.

The 5.7mm round was designed to give a pistol similar characteristics to a rifle round, but in a smaller package. They wanted to be able to shoot further and defeat soft body armor. This goal they accomplished, but contrary to popular belief, the round does not pack a lot of stopping power.
